Wanderers will face a tough test against a new look Black Cats side at the Reebok on Saturday. The opening fixture of the new campaign could see Megson field at least 4 of his five summer signings.
Defenders Knight and Ricketts have been impressive in pre-season and are ready to take their place in Megson's starting eleven. However Gretar Steinsson will be looking to retain his position at right back after making it his own during his first season with the club. At left back Paul Robinson could squeeze out Jloyd Samuel, although he doesn't look as solid he seems to be a Megson favourite. Cahill will without doubt be in the starting line up.
Bolton's defence could be in for a real test with Sunderland set to unleash new signings Fraizer Campbell and Darren Bent alongside the skill and pace of Kenwyn Jones.
Sunderland's most recent recruit, Lee Cattermole, will be joined by fellow midfielder Lorik Cana whilst Paraguay defender Paulo Da Silva will finally link up with his new teammates after having his visa application granted, but is unlikely to play due to a lack of match fitness.
Bolton meanwhile are still on the look out for attackers but are likely to field new midfielder Sean Davies brought in on a free and there may be a shock debut for South Korean winger Lee after he was officially unveiled by the club today.
Bolton are likely to stick with a similar system to last season with Elmander up front and Kevin Davies as second striker or possibly out wide.
